About

Vinayaka Shashti Vratham, also known as Pillayar Nonbu, is a 21-day period of fasting and devotion dedicated to Lord Ganesha. It begins on the first day of the waning moon (Krishna Pratipada) in the Tamil month of Karthigai (Sun in Vrischika) and concludes on the sixth day of the waxing moon (Shukla Shashti) in the Tamil month of Margazhi (Sun in Dhanu).

Significance:

This long vrata is observed for spiritual purification, overcoming obstacles, and seeking the grace of Lord Vinayaka. The 21 days symbolize the 21 strings or offerings traditionally made during the fast. It is particularly significant for those seeking mental clarity and success in their righteous endeavors.

Rituals & Puja Vidhi:

1. Fasting: Devotees often observe a simple diet or fast for 21 days, avoiding non-vegetarian food and intoxicants. 2. Recitation: Reciting Ganesha hymns like 'Ganesha Atharvashirsha' and stotras like 'Om Gam Ganapataye Namah'. 3. Offerings: Preparing 21 types of offerings or tying a thread with 21 knots as part of the deeksha. 4. Concluding Puja: On the final day (Vinayaka Shashti), special offerings like 'Appam' and modaks are made, and the fast is broken after witnessing the moon or completing the evening puja.
