Vijayadashami, also known as Dussehra, celebrates the victory of good over evil. It marks the day Lord Rama defeated the ten-headed demon king Ravana and the day Goddess Durga destroyed the buffalo demon Mahishasura.
The festival teaches that righteousness always triumphs over unrighteousness. It is considered one of the most auspicious days for 'Vidyarambham' (starting education) and for launching new ventures.
1. Shami Puja: Worshipping the Shami tree, which is believed to have protected the weapons of the Pandavas during their exile. 2. Ayudha Puja: Worshipping tools, vehicles, and instruments of one's trade as a mark of gratitude. 3. Effigy Burning: Burning large effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna, and Meghanada in open grounds. 4. Processions: Grand processions with decorated elephants and traditional music, especially in Mysore and Bastar.
