Rishi Panchami is observed on the fifth day of the Shukla Paksha in Bhadrapada. It is a day to honor the Saptarishis—Atri, Kashyapa, Bharadwaja, Gautama, Vishwamitra, Jamadagni, and Vashishta.
The festival is primarily observed as a day of atonement for any sins committed unknowingly in daily life. It emphasizes the importance of mental and physical purity and the preservation of ancient wisdom through the lineage of the sages.
1. Holy Bath: Devotees take a ritual bath in a river or pond, often using special herbs for purification. 2. Worship of Sages: Symbolic images or heaps of grain representing the seven sages are worshipped with flowers, sandalwood, and lamps. 3. Fasting: Devotees consume only fruits and avoid grains for the duration of the day. 4. Katha: Reading the stories of the Saptarishis and their contributions to the Vedas.
