About

Pitru Paksha is a 16-day lunar period in the Hindu calendar when Hindus pay homage to their ancestors (Pitrs), especially through food offerings.

Significance:

It is believed that the souls of our ancestors reside in Pitru Loka. During this fortnight, they are allowed to visit Earth. Performing Shraddha during this time helps the ancestors achieve moksha (liberation) and brings their blessings upon the family for peace, health, and prosperity.

Rituals & Puja Vidhi:

1. Tarpanam: Offering water mixed with black sesame seeds, barley, and kusha grass to the ancestors. 2. Pind Daan: Offering Pinda (cooked rice and sesame seeds) to satisfy the hunger of the departed souls. 3. Brahman Bhojan: Feeding Brahmins or the needy, as it is believed the food reaches the ancestors. 4. Austerity: Observers often abstain from haircuts, shaving, and certain foods (like garlic and onions) during this period.
