About

Onam is the major harvest festival of Kerala, celebrating the legendary homecoming of the righteous King Mahabali. The main day, Thiruvonam, occurs when the Shravana (Thiruvonam) Nakshatra prevails in the solar month of Simha (Avani/Chingam).

Significance:

Onam symbolizes equality, prosperity, and joy. It is believed that the spirit of King Mahabali visits his people to ensure they are happy and well-fed, reflecting a utopian era of righteousness.

Rituals & Puja Vidhi:

1. Pookkalam: Creating intricate floral carpets in front of homes to welcome King Mahabali. 2. Onasadya: Preparing and sharing a grand multi-course vegetarian feast served on a banana leaf. 3. Traditional Games: Participating in boat races (Vallam Kali), tiger dances (Pulikali), and tug-of-war. 4. New Clothes: Wearing new traditional attire (Onakkodi) and exchanging gifts with family.
