Maha Bharani is an extremely auspicious day for performing Shraddha (ancestor rituals) during the Pitru Paksha. It occurs when the Bharani Nakshatra prevails during the solar month of Kanya.
Bharani Nakshatra is ruled by Lord Yama, the god of death and justice. Performing Shraddha on this day is believed to yield immense merit, equivalent to performing the ritual in the holy city of Gaya, and helps in liberating the ancestors from suffering.
1. Maha Sankalpam: Taking a special vow for the liberation of the ancestors. 2. Pinda Daan: Offering balls of rice and black sesame (Pindas) to the departed souls. 3. Tarpanam: Offering water oblations to pacify the Pitrus. 4. Brahmin Bhojan: Feeding priests and making donations (Dana) to seek their blessings.
