Hala Shashti, also known as Balarama Jayanti in many regions, commemorates the birth of Lord Balarama, the elder brother of Lord Krishna. He is the symbol of strength and the presiding deity of agriculture.
Lord Balarama is often depicted carrying a 'Hala' (plough), symbolizing his role in cultivating the earth and the spirit. This day is especially significant for farmers and for mothers who observe a strict fast for the longevity and well-being of their sons.
1. Worship of the Plough: Farmers and devotees worship the plough or symbolic agricultural tools with vermilion, flowers, and incense. 2. Special Fasting: Mothers observe a fast (Vrat) where they avoid consuming any food produced by the plough (like grains). Instead, they eat wild rice (Pasai Dhan) and buffalo milk products. 3. Holy Bath: Devotees take a dip in holy rivers or lakes early in the morning. 4. Offering: Buffalo milk and its derivatives are offered to Lord Balarama in his infant form.
