About

Arudra Darshan, also known as Thiruvathirai, is celebrated in the solar month of Dhanu (Margazhi) as the conjunction of Ardra Nakshatra with Margazhi Pournami (Purnima). Ideally both are present during local Arunodaya (four ghatikas / 96 minutes before sunrise). If Pournami ends before Arunodaya opens, that civil day is rejected. When Ardra spans two dawns, the day with the longest Ardra in Arunodaya wins; a near-tie uses greater Pournami overlap in that window. If Pournami is at sunrise one day and Ardra is in Arunodaya only the next dawn, that next civil day is listed. Otherwise (e.g. New York January), the day with the longest simultaneous Ardra+Pournima overlap from sunrise through the next sunrise—including the holy night—is chosen. It honors Lord Shiva in his form as Nataraja, the King of Dance, representing the cosmic rhythms of the universe.

Significance:

The festival commemorates the day Shiva revealed his Ananda Tandava (Dance of Bliss) to his devotees. It symbolizes the continuous cycle of creation, preservation, and dissolution. The 'Arudra' star itself is associated with the 'golden red' hue of Lord Shiva's infinite energy.

Rituals & Puja Vidhi:

1. Abhishekam: Performing a grand holy bath for the idol of Lord Nataraja with milk, honey, and curd. 2. Thiruvathirai Kali: Preparing a special sweet dish made of jaggery and rice as an offering. 3. Fasting: Devotees observe a fast and stay awake in meditation on the Lord's cosmic dance. 4. Temple Visit: Visiting Shiva temples early in the morning to witness the 'Darshan' of the decorated deity.
