About

Aadi Perukku, also known as Pathinettam Perukku, is a unique Tamil festival celebrated on the 18th day of the Tamil month of Aadi (when the Sun is in Karka/Cancer).

Significance:

It honors the life-sustaining properties of water and is celebrated as a monsoon festival to express gratitude for the rising water levels in rivers, particularly the Kaveri. It symbolizes prosperity, fertility, and the flourishing of agriculture.

Rituals & Puja Vidhi:

1. River Worship: Devotees gather at riverbanks, lakes, and temple tanks to offer prayers to the water goddess. 2. Offerings: Flowers, akshata (rice), and jaggery are offered to the flowing water. 3. Festive Meals: Families prepare various types of rice dishes (Chitrannam) like coconut rice, lemon rice, and sweet pongal to eat together by the water. 4. Tying the Thread: Unmarried girls tie a yellow thread seeking a good husband, and married women replace their mangalsutra thread for the longevity of their spouses.
