Yogini Ekadashi is widely observed to rid oneself of severe diseases, physical ailments, and the karmic reactions of past misdeeds, guiding the devotee toward spiritual purity.
The Padma Purana narrates the story of Hemamali, a Yaksha servant of King Kuvera. Hemamali neglected his duty of gathering flowers for Lord Shiva because of his infatuation with his beautiful wife. Enraged, Kuvera cursed him to suffer from terrible leprosy. Wandering in agony, Hemamali reached the ashram of Sage Markandeya, who instructed him to observe Yogini Ekadashi. By doing so, he was cured of the dreadful disease and returned to his original divine form.
