Devshayani Ekadashi marks the monumental day when Lord Vishnu enters His four-month-long cosmic slumber (Chaturmasya) on the coiled serpent Shesha Naga in the Kshira Sagara (Ocean of Milk).
As told by Lord Brahma to Narada in the Bhavishya Purana, this day initiates the sacred Chaturmas period, during which ascetics settle in one place and householders adopt strict spiritual vows. The scripture tells of King Mandhata, whose kingdom faced a severe three-year drought. On the advice of Sage Angira, the king and his subjects observed Devshayani Ekadashi, which immensely pleased Lord Vishnu, resulting in abundant rainfall and the restoration of prosperity.
1. Fasting & Vows: Taking special vows (Sankalpa) for the four months of Chaturmas, such as giving up certain foods. 2. Shayan Utsav: Worshipping an image of Lord Vishnu and symbolically laying Him to rest on a decorated bed. 3. Recitation: Reading the Vishnu Purana and chanting the Lord's holy names. 4. Charity: Donating umbrellas, footwear, and food to Brahmins to prepare for the monsoon season.
