Papankusha Ekadashi is celebrated as the 'goad' (Ankusha) that controls the 'elephant' of sins (Papa). It helps the devotee gain mastery over their senses and secures a path to heaven.
The Brahma Vaivarta Purana highlights its glory through the story of Krodhana, a cruel and highly sinful fowler. Nearing the end of his life and terrified of hell, he sought refuge in Sage Chyavana. The sage took pity on him and instructed him to observe Papankusha Ekadashi. Despite his lifetime of misdeeds, Krodhana's sincere observance of the fast cleansed him entirely, allowing him to ascend to Vaikuntha at the time of his death.
