Karka Sankranti occurs when the Sun moves into the Karka (Cancer) zodiac sign, officially marking the start of Dakshinayana (the Sun's six-month southward journey).
Significance:
This day transitions from the daytime of the Devas to their nighttime. It is a period reserved for spiritual introspection, meditation, and ancestral worship. The monsoon season fully sets in, marking a time for seeking inner purity.
Rituals & Puja Vidhi:
1. Pitru Tarpan: Offering water and sesame seeds to departed ancestors to seek their blessings and peace. 2. Holy Bath: Taking a dip in sacred rivers or Kunds to purify the body and soul. 3. Lord Shiva Worship: Praying to Lord Shiva, especially as this often coincides with the holy month of Shravana. 4. Charity: Donating umbrellas, clothes, and food to the poor is considered highly meritorious.
