About Festivals

Welcome to the most astronomically precise Hindu festival calendar available. At Haindavam, we do not rely on static, pre-published panchangams that are calculated for a single reference city (like Ujjain or Varanasi). Instead, we dynamically calculate the exact planetary positions, sunrise, and sunset timings for your specific geographical location. How We Ensure Unmatched Accuracy: • Hindu festivals are determined by complex lunar and solar parameters, primarily the Tithi (lunar day) active at a specific time of day (such as sunrise, mid-day, or midnight), depending on the specific scriptural rules for each festival. Because sunrise and sunset times vary drastically across the globe, a festival that falls on a Tuesday in India might actually fall on a Monday in the United States or a Wednesday in Australia. • Our backend engine utilizes high-precision ephemeris algorithms (Swiss Ephemeris) to compute the exact degree of the Sun and Moon to the second. By inputting your precise latitude and longitude, we calculate the local sunrise and tithi end-times to determine exactly which date satisfies the scriptural conditions (Dharma Sindhu and Nirnaya Sindhu) for your exact location. Amanta vs. Purnimanta Systems: The Hindu calendar is primarily divided into two lunar month naming conventions: • Amanta (Mukhyamana): The month ends on the New Moon (Amavasya). This system is predominantly followed in South India (Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala) and Gujarat. • Purnimanta (Gaunamana): The month ends on the Full Moon (Purnima). This system is predominantly followed in North India (Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, etc.). While the dates of the festivals remain exactly the same across both systems, the name of the lunar month in which they fall will differ. For example, Maha Shivaratri falls in the month of Magha in the Amanta system, but falls in Phalguna in the Purnimanta system. Our calendar allows you to toggle seamlessly between both schemes so you can follow the tradition of your ancestors, no matter where you live today. Types of Festivals We Calculate: Our dynamic engine categorizes and calculates hundreds of observances, including: • Major National Festivals: Diwali, Holi, Navaratri, Ganesh Chaturthi, Maha Shivaratri, etc. • Recurring Monthly Vrats: Ekadashi (including Smartha and Vaishnava variants), Pradosham, Sankashti Chaturthi, Masika Shivaratri, and Skanda Shashti. • Solar Events: All 12 Surya Sankrantis (Makar Sankranti, Mesha Sankranti, etc.) with precise transit times. • Eclipses: Solar and Lunar eclipses (Grahan) specifically filtered to show only when they are visible in your selected location.
